This class will cover the firearms restraining order act. The firearms restraining order (FRO) allows family/household members, and law enforcement to work with courts to temporarily remove guns and prevent the purchase of new guns by individuals who pose a significant

This law, passed in the summer of 2018, allows for people to use firearm restraining orders to prevent violence in their homes and community. It provides family slash household members and law enforcement to be proactive in addressing their concerns, by providing them a civil measure to prevent a person who is exhibiting dangerous behavior from legally accessing firearms.

This class will cover:

  • Who may seek a firearm restraining order.
  • What a firearm restraining order prohibits.
  • The procedure to obtain both an emergency and a plenary firearms training order.
  • Law enforcement responsibility under the firearm restraining order act.
  • Practical considerations in requesting a firearm restraining order.

This training is COPE approved.

About the Presenter:

Cordelia Coppleson is an Assistant Attorney General, assigned to the Criminal Enforcement Division of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. She is chief of the Law Enforcement Training Bureau. Cordelia is responsible for helping and supporting prosecutors and law enforcement agencies as they implement the Firearms Restraining Order through adopting policies, training, and other requirements of the Act. She is available to answer any questions as to law enforcement and their obligations and duties under the law. Cordelia has developed an Illinois Training and Standards Board-approved curriculum for training on Firearms Restraining Orders and has conducted numerous trainings for police and prosecutors across the state. Cordelia has helped to develop approved informational materials for law enforcement and constituents on how to obtain Firearms Restraining Orders in Illinois. Cordelia has helped to develop a series of Targeted Violence trainings hosted by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office in partnership with the US Secret Service, the National Threat Assessment Center, and the Department of Homeland Security. Cordelia is a committed prosecutor, having spent the majority of her 25 year career as a Cook County State’s Attorney assigned to the criminal division, with extensive experience in investigating, preparing, and trying violent crimes.
