Understanding Behaviors:  Lessons for a Lifetime

Everyday our interactions are based on lots of different bits of information. Our behaviors are the communication of those bits of information. Not just our behaviors, but the behaviors of every person with whom we interact. Every behavior, whether wanted or unwanted, positive or negative, is communicating something. How we respond to that communication will determine the outcome of the conversation. This session will teach you how to recognize your own communication as well as those around you. Participants will learn ways to improve their mental health and make the classroom/work/home environment a place where every person is valued.

Cognitive Bias:  What it is and how does it affect me in the workplace?

We all have cognitive biases that affect us in our daily lives.  These biases affect our mental health.  They drive how we respond to situations, how we think, and even how we work.  Understanding what a cognitive bias is will help you in all aspects of your life and can greatly improve your mental health.  Attendees will walk away knowing how these biases are formed, why we need to be aware of them, how we can identify them, and how to change them.

SHELLEY KENOW is a 30 year veteran special educator, author, speaker, IEP Consultant and Master IEP Coach from rural southern Illinois. Shelley’s mission is to change the world’s perspective of people with disabilities. She does this through speaking, training sessions, her book, and her Livestreams #no limits and Friday with Fran. She has written hundreds, if not thousands, of Individualized Education Programs (IEP), and led as many or more IEP meetings. She has trained thousands of people on Leveling Up the IEP, Understanding Behaviors, Cognitive Bias, and many other topics related to special education. Shelley believes we know who we are, but not who we will be. With that in mind, she believes it is crucial for all those involved in writing the IEP to have a positive outlook for and to focus on their abilities rather than their disabilities.
