Training: Supporting Children and Teens Exposed to Domestic Violence – Guidance for Probation Officers

This training provides probation officers with insight into how domestic violence impacts children and adolescents connected to individuals on their caseloads. Learn to recognize behavioral indicators, understand developmental effects, and explore strategies for making appropriate referrals and supporting family stability.

Domestic Violence Child & Teen Counselor at Freedom House in Princeton, IL

Joaquin Barraza is a dedicated professional with a strong passion for supporting youth impacted by domestic violence. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northern Illinois University in 2017 and has since devoted his career to trauma-informed care and advocacy. Since 2017, Joaquin has served as a counselor at Freedom House, a leading agency providing comprehensive support to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. In his role, he specializes in working with children and adolescents, helping them navigate the complex emotional and psychological challenges that come with experiencing or witnessing violence in the home. Through compassionate, evidence-based interventions, Joaquin empowers young clients to heal, build resilience, and reclaim their sense of safety and self-worth. In addition to his direct service work, Joaquin is also a respected educator and advocate. He has provided training and professional development to educators, social workers, law enforcement, and healthcare providers on the dynamics of domestic violence and its profound impact on children. His presentations are known for blending psychological insight with practical tools, fostering a deeper understanding of trauma and promoting more effective support systems for vulnerable youth.

 

IPCSA Policy Regarding Virtual, COPE Approved Trainings

To receive training credit for virtual, COPE approved IPCSA sponsored trainings, each participant’s display name must contain their first name, last name and county of employment. 

In those rare occasions where individual display names are not possible due to lack of equipment or department resources, multiple participants may use a single computer; however, a supervisor/CMO/Director must email association1969@ipcsa.org at least 48 hours PRIOR to the start of the training to provide a list of those individuals who will be on camera.   The list shall contain the following information for each participant:

  • First and last name
  • Email address
  • County of Employment

On the day of the training, ALL participants *must* be visible on camera, have access to the microphone, and actively participate in the training.
