Treatment Considerations with the Dual Diagnosis Population
With the increased awareness and education involving mental health issues, including those who are struggling with substance use disorders, what was the outlier is now the norm. In the last 25 years we have seen a shift in these two realms being dealt with only as separate issues, to now it being common place to address both sets of circumstances within the same treatment modality. However, not all programs and services are the same. This session will look at how mental health problems and patterns of substance misuse can start off as coping mechanisms but then lead to exacerbations of each. We will look at the roles psychotropic medications can play in treatment, the experience and understanding of the medical provider prescribing these medications, trends in diagnoses and medications, and how to determine if the program that you are working with can adequately meet the needs of the person you are working with.
