Perceived Transformational Leadership Styles and Job Satisfaction of Probation Officers

This presentation provides a synopsis as to the findings of the 2022 study conducted by Dr. Joann R. McGee, who examined the relationship between leaderships styles and job satisfaction amongst probations officers who were also active members of IPCSA. The overall purpose of this presentation is to provide colleagues and key stakeholders with perceptions and expectations of leadership as it relates to the field of probation service work and its officers, as well as the value of adopting transformational leadership styles in the workplace.

About the presenter


Dr. Joann Ruth McGee, Director of Court Services in Stephenson County, is a servant leader and advocate for social justice and equity who earned her first degree from Northern Illinois University with a BA in Interpersonal/Public Communications. She then returned to her hometown where she began working in the social service and criminal justice realm as a Victim’s System’s/Legal Advocate to domestic violence victims, during which time she established the Domestic Violence Task Force. This opportunity began a lifelong career intertwining the criminal justice system with the spirit of helping others. Dr. McGee went on to become a substance abuse counselor and thereafter obtained employment through the Stephenson County Probation Department where she has been employed for the past twenty-three years.

During her time as a probation officer, she continued to further her professional and educational growth. Dr. McGee earned a Post-Baccalaureate certificate in strategic planning and public policy and successfully completed program studies for the Leadership Institute through Highland Community College. Additionally, Dr. McGee earned her MPA all while tutoring others who have also gone on to earn varying degrees in such fields as criminal justice, nursing, and business administration. She was also the first recipient of the IPCSA scholarship (2018). In 2022, through persistence, perseverance, and faith she earned her PhD in Public Administration- Emphasis in law and public policy from Walden University.

Dr. McGee has served in voluntary capacities throughout her career including her previous role as Board Vice-President for the Tyler’s Justice Center for Children. She was selected and served as a member of the Mayor of Freeport’s social justice committee and was academically appointed by her dissertation chair to serve as a cohort leader/peer mentor for future PhD candidates. Dr. McGee was recently invited and granted the privilege of presiding over the installation of officers for the Freeport Branch of the NAACP and is also a member of the International Pi Alpha Alpha Association for public administration professionals.
