Awards Committee


The Awards Committee meets formally once per year to select those nominated for awards given by the Association. All major awards are considered by the committee, which also coordinates the Recognition Awards. Award nominations are usually called for in the June newsletter. The awards are presented annually at the Fall Conference.

2023 Awards Nominations

Protocol: Please note, this nomination process should be considered confidential.  Unless otherwise noted, the Association’s Awards Committee and Executive Assistant will receive the submission of award nominations.  The Awards Committee retains the authority to determine eligibility/compliance with appropriate award criteria.  Members of the Awards Committee are not eligible for nomination/awards in the calendar year they are active on the committee.  Submission of a nomination does not guarantee the individual will receive the award.

Awards will be presented during the 2022 IPCSA Fall Conference

The following are descriptions of each award to be presented, along with a link to complete the online award nomination.  For ALL awards, you will be required to provide information related to the nominee and person submitting nomination.  ALSO, ALL award nominations must be reviewed by the local CMO/Director prior to submission.  If the Nominee is a CMO/Director, then review by the Awards Committee is required.  You will be asked to certify that your CMO/Director has reviewed your nomination (subject to verification).

All Members in good standing may nominate a Member for an award.

  • Distinguished Service Award – Field of Achievement/Contribution to his/her Department: To be eligible for this award, the following must apply: *Nominee must be a current IPCSA member and employed at least 2 years with the nominating circuit/county; *Nominee has made a significant achievement/contribution to the department (must be described); and *Nominee has not received this award within the past five years.  To nominate your colleague for the Distinguished Service Award click HERE:  2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination – Distinguished Service Award
  • Michael Rohan Innovative Leadership Award – This award is presented annually to the program in Detention or Probation that exemplifies leadership in offender program development with demonstrated evidence of outcomes with clients.  The selection criteria include: *The program should have been initiated at least 1 year ago and should have been operational for at least 6 months; *The program should have a clearly defined mission and goal; *There should be documentation of effective outcomes with offenders; and *The program should address the question of “what makes this program innovative?”   To nominate an innovative program for this award click HERE: 2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination- Michael Rohan Innovative Leadership Award

For the awards listed below, please be prepared to answer the following questions: 1) specific contributions or achievements in the field of court services; 2) years of service, educational, professional advancement, and community involvement; 3) professional affiliations, publications/writings, awards, recognitions, etc…; 4) standards, innovations, or dedication as they relate to the court services profession, and 5) additional information (e.g. personal attributes, IPCSA involvement, etc…) which explains why the nominee should receive the award:

  • Gene Hughes Award – Highest Standards of Profession:  This award is presented to the probation officer who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, has best exemplified the highest standards of the profession.  Nominee must have a minimum of seven years of experience within the profession to be eligible.  To nominate your colleague for the Gene Hughes Award click HERE:  2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination – Gene Hughes Award
  • Pauline Gansauer Award – Field of Dedication to the Profession: This award is presented to the Probation Officer who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, has exemplified the highest standards of the dedication to the profession.  Nominee must have a minimum of seven years of experience within the profession to be eligible. To nominate your colleague for the Pauline Gansauer Award click HERE:  2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination – Pauline Gansauer Award
  • William C. Albertson Award – Field of Achievement to the Profession: This award is presented to the probation officer who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, has exemplified the highest standards of the profession in the field of achievement.  Nominee must have a minimum of seven years of experience within the profession to be eligible. To nominate your colleague for the William C.   • Robert E. Burdine – Officer of the Year Award: This award is presented to a Line Officer (Juvenile Detention, Adult Probation, Juvenile Probation) who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, has exemplified the highest standards of the profession by the specific accomplishments and/or contributions to his/her department. To nominate your colleague for the Robert E.   • Exemplary Service Award – Further Probation and Court Services within the Private Sector:  This award is presented to the individual from the community who, in the opinion of the Executive Board, has served to further probation and court services through their dedication and commitment within the private sector. To nominate your colleague for the Exemplary Service Award click HERE:  2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination – Exemplary Service Award
  •  S. William Ettinger Service Award – Field of Dedication/Service to the Association: This award is presented to the individual who, in the opinion of the Executive Board, has exemplified the highest degree of dedication and service to the Association.  Nominee must have a minimum of seven years of experience within the profession to be eligible. To nominate your colleague for the S.   • Frank Calkins Award – Committee Member of the Year: This award is presented to the individual who demonstrates support of the Association through committee work.  Nominee for this award is selected by the Representative Committee.  Nominee CANNOT be a Committee Chair.  Nominations for this award will be forwarded to Representative Committee Chair Deborah Norman. To nominate your colleague for the Frank Calkins Award click HERE: 2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination- Frank Calkins Committee Member of the Year Award
  • Legislative Service Award – Legislative Leadership:  This award is presented to the individual who, in the opinion of the Executive Board, has displayed legislative leadership which prioritizes criminal justice legislation that positively impacts probation and court services.  To nominate your colleague for the Legislative Service Award click HERE: 2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination- Legislative Service Award
  • Connie Kaiser Restorative Justice Award – This award is presented to the individual who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, exemplifies the highest standards of the profession in the area of promoting restorative justice principles, practices, and activities for youth in the juvenile justice system.  To nominate your colleague for the Connie Kaiser Restorative Justice Award click HERE: 2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination- Connie Kaiser Restorative Justice Award

Nominations for the Past President and Michael Shaughnessy Superior Service Awards are accepted throughout the year.

  • Past President Award:  This award is presented to the Association member upon his/her retirement, who has served as a Pas President to the Association.  The criteria for this award is as follows: *Must have been a President of IPCSA and *Must have an announced retirement date.  The following information is needed for the nomination: *Date of Retirement; *Dates Nominee served as President to IPCSA; *employment history (include where and how long employed, educational background, professional advancement, programs/initiatives devloped/implemented, and any other contributions to the department; * involvement with IPCSA (include when became member, committee activities other initiatives supported, executive board involvement, must include years as President…); and *anything else about the nominee that would be important to consider.  To nominate your colleague for the Past President Award click HERE: 2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination – Past President’s Award
  • Michael Shaughnessy Superior Service Award: Presented to the individual who, in the opinion of the Executive Board has demonstrated superior service to the department, the Association and the Field of Probation, prior to his/her retirement.  The criteria for this award is as follows: *Active member of the Association for 10 years; *Employed in probation or detention for more than 15 years; *Demonstrated commitment and significant contributions to the field of probation; and *Announced retirement date.  The following information is needed for the nomination: *Place of employment at retirement; *Anticipated date of retirement; *Employment history (include where and how long employed, educational background, professional advancements, programs/initiatives developed/implemented, and any other contributions to the department); *Involvement with IPCSA (include when became a member, committee activities, other initiatives supported, executive board involvement…); *Commitment and significant contributions to the field of probation (include professional affiliations, innovations, publications, awards/recognitions, initiatives…); and *Anything else about the nominee that would be important to consider .   To nominate your colleague for the Michael Shaughnessy Superior Service Award click HERE:  2022 IPCSA Awards Nomination – Michael Shaughnessy Superior Service Award
